Roger Phillips
Partner
As a Larix Partner, Roger’s responsibilities include sourcing, negotiating, and closing the investments, contributing to the execution of portfolio companies’ growth and exit strategies and to the build-out of the Firm’s team of investment professionals.
Roger brings to Larix a diverse record of healthcare-related investing/divesting and corporate development activity, including sourcing and executing transactions at the large cap, middle market, and lower-middle market segments of the transaction value spectrum, many of those transactions involved negotiations with the founder/owner/operating families of the target companies.
Prior to joining Larix in August 2023, Roger enjoyed a 20 year career at Walgreens Boots Alliance, most recently as Vice President, Global Mergers and Acquisitions. Roger joined WBA predecessor company Alliance UniChem plc in 2003, at that time a London-headquartered pharmaceutical wholesaler with operations in the United Kingdom, France, and Italy. In the following decade, during which Roger held increasingly responsible corporate development, corporate strategy, and M&A roles, Alliance UniChem expanded (via acquisitions) its pharmaceutical wholesale platform to a position of pan-European market leadership, made landmark joint venture and control investments in Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East/North Africa, and merged with United Kingdom retail pharmacy operator Boots plc to form Alliance Boots.
Following the December 2014 completion of the merger between Walgreen Co. and Alliance Boots to form Walgreens Boots Alliance, Inc., Roger relocated to WBA’s headquarters in Deerfield, Illinois. During Roger’ tenure, WBA made direct investments (and co- investments with leading private equity firms) in a wide range of healthcare companies, including retail and institutional pharmacy businesses, pharmacy supply chain and automation technology, specialty pharmaceuticals distribution, primary care provision, value-based care enablement, homecare health services, health plan member enrollment, patient engagement, diagnostic testing, and post-acute care coordination. Roger also has significant experience divesting, to both corporate and financial sponsor buyers, businesses that were no longer relevant to WBA’s strategic direction.
Roger’s tenure at WBA included sitting on the board of directors of various WBA subsidiaries, joint ventures, and equity method investments, in which capacity he assisted the management teams in formulating and executing organic as well as M&A-driven growth strategies.
Prior to WBA, Roger held corporate finance and M&A roles with several global and commercial banks.
Roger holds an AB from Dartmouth College and an MBA from Cornell University.
Although a native East Coaster, Roger and his wife (and their seven-year-old Weimaraner) are happily planted in Chicago’s suburban North Shore, have become ardent fans of Italian Beef sandwiches and deep-dish pizza, the Bears, and the Cubs. As a consequence of their 13 years living in London, they also continue to support with passion (if not much success) Fulham Football Club of the English Premier League.
