Carl Traynor, JD

Managing Partner

As Managing Partner, Carl’s responsibilities include sourcing, negotiating, and closing Larix’s investments, contributing to the execution of portfolio companies’ growth and exit strategies and to the build-out of both the Larix investment team and Larix portfolio company management teams.

Carl brings to Larix more than 25 years of operations, advisory, corporate development, and investing experience, including the sourcing and execution of transactions in the lower-middle market segments of the healthcare, software, packaging, automation, and specialty manufacturing industries, many of those transactions involved negotiations with the founder/owner/operating families of the target companies.

Prior to founding Larix, Carl served as Director, Private Investments at TLP Group, the family office of one of the original team members of a prominent global hedge fund. At TLP Carl served as a member of the Investment Committee sourcing new opportunities, developing investment theses, making direct investments, and providing advisory services to portfolio companies including strategic planning, fundraising, selection and development of leadership teams, product planning, as well as sales forecasting and execution.

Prior to TLP, Carl served in senior executive roles at subsidiaries of two publicly traded companies, with headquarters in the United Kingdom and Japan, respectively. As a member of the Executive Team at Domino Printing Sciences’ North American subsidiary Carl was responsible for Marketing and Sales groups. At Yaskawa’s North American subsidiary, Carl was responsible for North American Marketing and Sales and was a member of the Yaskawa’s global automation strategy team.

Prior to joining Yaskawa’s North American subsidiary, Carl was a member of a software startup that created robot calibration technology used by industrial robot manufacturers and large industrial end-users in North America, Europe, and Asia. Following Carl’s graduation from Law School he was a member of the Law Division at Lincoln National Corporation.

Carl serves in an ongoing role on the Advisory Board to the University of Chicago Shultz Innovation Fund and is a Mentor and Judge for Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management’s New Venture Discovery Program. Carl has also served the local community as the Chair of the Board of Directors of the Boys and Girls Club of Lake County and is currently an active member of the Board of the Mid-America Healthcare Investors Network.

Carl holds a JD from the University of Minnesota Law School where he served as a Student Director of the Civil Practice Clinic and was a member of the Intellectual Property Moot Court. Carl also holds a BA (with High Honors and Distinction) from the Economics Program at the University of Michigan.

While Carl was born in Ohio, he and his wife Darcy are both University of Michigan alumni with two grown sons who share their passion for college football. Darcy, Carl, and their lovable hound Holly, now live in the City of Chicago where they enjoy exploring the restaurant scene, commiserating with other Bears fans, and spending time with friends at Wrigley Field.
